Payment gateways that are Level 1 certified must undergo a yearly audit by a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) to ensure that they meet PCI DSS requirements.

Level 2 Certification

Level 2 certification is required for payment gateways that process less than six million transactions per year. Payment gateways that are Level 2 certified must self-assess their compliance with PCI DSS requirements annually. While Level 2 certification is less rigorous than Level 1, it still requires payment gateways to adhere to strict security protocols.

EMV Level 3 certification

EMV Level 3 certification is a phase of terminal testing that helps ensure that chip terminals that have been configured for deployment by acquirers are correctly integrated into the schemes (Mastercard, Visa, RuPay, Discover, Amex etc.) payment acceptance environment and do not unduly contribute to interoperability problems. It improves acceptance of schemes branded products. It is performed on the terminal in an environment which is as near as possible to the live one and where the connectivity to the acquirer host mirrors production.

EMV Certification 

EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) is a global standard for credit and debit card payments that uses chip technology to reduce the risk of fraud. Payment gateways that are EMV certified have demonstrated that they can process EMV transactions securely.

PCI DSS Certification

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards that all merchants who accept credit card payments must comply with. Payment gateways that are PCI DSS certified have demonstrated that they meet the security standards set forth by the PCI Security Standards Council.

Some payment gateway providers offer certification as part of their service. For example, PayPal offers payment gateway certification as part of their service, and their payment gateway is Level 1 certified.
